National School Choice Week

Most people know of today because it is Martin Luther King Jr. day, and they should since he was a truly brave, and heroic man.  Martin fought for peace in only a way that he could. Every year my children, and I read about him on this day, and listen to his “I Have A Dream” speech.  What most people don’t know is that today is also the start of National School Choice Week. What that is is a celebration of families rights to choice the education for their child whether it be public, private, charter, or even home school.

This year National School Choice week is January 20-26th.  Celebrations are held all over the country with the help of NSCW at www.schoolchoice.com.  They send out a kit to anyone interested in holding an event with some supplies.  While celebrating the choice of how to educate our children, people can learn about their different options as well.  I chose to hold my even at a local library, and from it’s low attendance, I have learned what to do differently next year.

Next year I would choose to invite private, charter, and public schools to attend. I would invite homeschool co-ops, and alternative learning programs to be represented as well.  I only advertised on social media, and brought information from my homeschool co-op, and NSCW. Inviting more organizations would not only provide more advertising for the event, but it would actually give parents a fully educated view of their education options, and after all that is what National School Choice Week is all about.

  1. This is awesome! I have never heard of this week, I used to be against home schooling years ago, now is one of my top options. I also love Montessori and Waldorf schools.

    Thank you for sharing!

  2. I love how you are already planning ahead for next year. I was part of an event today in which students from 3 schools got together for STEAM and literacy activities (2 public and 1 private). The connections made were amazing and really benefited the kids. 🙂
